Yeah it’s in there as a preventative specifically because it causes nausea, much like bittering agent in canned air.
Negative. It’s in there to lubricate the lungs and throat, making it easier to cough up phlegm. It also breaks the phlegm down so it is easier to cough up. If it was just added as a deterrant for abuse then it would make no sense that they have DXM-only containing products.
High doses of Guafenisin are used to aneasthetize horses. In high doses in humans it acts as a mild muscle relaxer. It does cause nausea at high doses, but it is quite safe. A pharmacist I once knew always took the Hydrocodone Tussin because it only contained hydrocodone and guafenisin, as opposed to hydrocodone and acetaminophen.
I wouldn’t recommend high doses of guafenisin (and certainly if you use DXM recreationally then get the DXM-only products) but guafenisin is probably the safest active ingredient you could find in a DXM product.

When I close my eyes, I see this thing. it’s like this big sign. and the name is in, like, bright blue neon lights with, like, purple outline. and this name is just so bright and so sharp that the sign, it just blows up because the name is just so powerful. it says:
